Course-Registration Policies

First Year Writing

 

  • First-Time Freshmen: Full-time freshmen are required to complete ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 during their first year at NJIT.

 

  • Transfer Students: Students who have transferred from another college or university and have not received credit for ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 must enroll in these two courses within their first year of matriculation.

 

  • Summer Courses: Students may complete equivalents of ENGL 101 and/or ENGL 102 at other four year colleges or universities during the summer session only if the course(s) is (are) not concurrently offered at NJIT. Students cannot take these courses at community colleges.  The duration of the summer course at the other institution must be eight weeks or more and the modality of the course cannot be online/virtual. Advanced approval from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is mandatory.

 

  • Winter Session: Students are not permitted to enroll in corresponding versions of ENGL 101 or ENGL 102 at other four year colleges or universities during the winter session.

 

  • Transfer Credit: Transfer credit for ENGL 101 and/or ENGL 102 will be approved only if the relevant course(s) meet(s) NJIT transferability and equivalency requirements. Similar course titles do not indicate transferability or equivalency.

 

  • GER Requirements: Students must complete ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 (or their equivalents) with a grade of C or higher to fulfill the NJIT GER curriculum and to graduate. A grade of TQ for either course does not satisfy the GER requirement.

 

  • Undergraduate Transfer Credit Evaluations: Transfer students must submit official transcripts from all of their former institutions to the Office of the Registrar before having their credits evaluated by NJIT.

 

 

  • Transfer Credit Evaluations: The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences evaluates transfer credits based upon course description, prerequisite requirements, workload, and class level. Students must have passed their courses with a grade of C or higher to have a course considered for transfer. In addition, similar course titles do not indicate transferability. Courses with similar titles to those at NJIT may not be equivalent to those offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students must provide official transcripts, former course descriptions, and former syllabi for evaluation. Although we do prioritize awarding transfer credits for former completed courses, approval of transfer credits is not guaranteed. 

 

  • Evaluation Procedures: The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences evaluates transferability and equivalency by considering the relevant course description, prerequisite requirements, workload, and class level. This review is based on official transcripts and course syllabi and it is the student’s responsibility to provide all relevant documentation. Approval of transfer credits is at the discretion of the Department.

 

  • Transfer Eligibility: To receive transfer credit, students must have earned for the relevant course(s) a grade of C or higher. Similar course titles do not indicate transferability or equivalency. 

 

  • Transfer Logic: Lower-level courses (100- and 200-level) cannot be transferred as upper-level courses (300- and 400-level). In addition, students cannot combine two or more lower-level courses to constitute an upper-level course.

 

  • HSS Senior Seminar Registration Eligibility: Students seeking to register for an HSS Senior Seminar must have successfully completed the following prerequisites: ENGL 101 and ENGL 102, one HUM/HIST 200-level course, two HUM/HIST 300-level courses, and have senior standing (at least 90 credits). Enrollment priority for HSS Senior Seminars is given to graduating seniors to enable timely completion of their degree requirements. HSS Senior Seminars must be completed at NJIT.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP): CLEP is a program administered by the College Board. Some NJIT departments allow students to receive credit for successfully completing certain CLEP examinations but these are mostly associated with freshman-level courses. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences does not allow students to use CLEP credit to satisfy degree requirements.
