The English Language Program (ELP) offers courses that increase English language proficiency and that strengthen reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Courses are offered to both native and non-native speakers of English. The focus in all of these courses is on using English for academic purposes. Tutoring is a required part of most of these courses.
NJIT’s English Language Program is for students currently enrolled at NJIT and pursuing a degree. It is not a stand-alone or intensive English program.
Students are assigned to the appropriate course based on their performance in English placement testing. Non-native speakers of English are placed into one of four courses:
ENGL 090
General Skills in the English Language
ENGL 096
Reading, Writing, Critical Thinking
ENGL 099
Reading, Writing, Language
ENGL 100
English Composition: Introduction to Academic Reading and Writing
Students placed in ENGL 090 also take ENGL 096 and ENGL 100, in sequence. Students placed in ENGL 096 subsequently take ENGL 100. Passing ENGL 100 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher satisfies 3 credits of the 6-credit introductory communication courses requirement in the General Education Requirements (GER). ENGL 100 is the GER equivalent of ENGL 101.
The English Language Program also offers sections of several GER courses in the HSS Department. These sections carry full academic credit and are designed to help students continue to strengthen their English language proficiency, while also mastering course content. Enrollment in an ELP section of a course is optional. ELP sections are offered for the following courses:
ENGL 102
English Composition: Introduction to Writing for Research
COM 313
Technical Writing
LIT 320
American Literature
LIT 350
Fiction
The ELP also offers several courses for graduate students, which undergraduates can take with permission. These include courses in public speaking, pronunciation, advanced conversation, and technical writing and oral presentations.
