A Welcome from the Chair
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences' focus is on you, the student.
Greetings!
Welcome to the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the New Jersey Institute of Technology! I am delighted that you are interested in exploring the extraordinary passion and diverse range of activities of one of the university's largest departments. We have more than 100 members—tenure and tenure-track faculty, lecturers and senior lecturers, and part-time instructors—with a wide breadth of expertise in literature, philosophy, communications, journalism, theatre, music, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and environmental and sustainability studies. Virtually every undergraduate student at NJIT, regardless of their specific major, completes at least four courses, ten percent of their total credits, with the Department of Humanities. We are also incredibly proud of our First-Year Writing Program that offers students exceptional instruction to become the writers they always aspired to be!
In addition to being responsible for a significant share of the General Education Requirements that ensure students graduate from NJIT as accomplished scholars, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences offers specialized degree programs in Communication and Media, Science, Technology, and Society, and Theatre Arts and Technology. Additionally, we are, for the first time, offering a new and innovative undergraduate degree in the field of Cyberpsychology. Many undergraduate students at NJIT also select to complete a minor overseen by the Department (generally involving the completion of five specialized courses) in Communication; Environmental Studies and Sustainability; Global Studies; Journalism; Literature; Philosophy and Applied Ethics; Psychology; Science, Technology, and Society; Technology, Gender, and Diversity, and Theatre Arts and Technology. In addition, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is the home of the English as a Second Language Program.
Moreover, we are pleased to sponsor the Writing Center and its staff of specially trained writing coaches who provide personalized tutoring on all modes of communication, including written assignments and presentations for courses, personal statements, project proposals, and much more.
There is much to explore, and I heartily encourage you to reach out to me or other members of the Department with any questions. We very much look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes and kind regards,
Dr. Maurie J. Cohen, Chair
