Tips for Speaking in Public
- Project your voice:
- Look at and speak to everyone in the room so that you can be heard even by the individuals at the back of the room. (Do not shout.)
- Maintain eye contact
- Look at your audience, just as you would look at a friend in a conversation.
- Look at the computer screen in front of you to make your PowerPoint presentation. Do not turn your back to the audience to look at the projected images. Work the mouse while glancing down at the screen and at your notes.
- Slow down
- If an accent interferes with your intelligibility, speaking at a slower rate will result in clarity.
Some Tips for Using PowerPoint
Keep your audience and purpose in mind!
Audience:
- Do not bore them or put them to sleep.
- Do not annoy them by making your slides difficult to read.
- Remember their level (you cannot speak too technically to a non-technical group).
Purpose:
- You are trying to inform or teach.
- Your purpose is not to read aloud what is on the slides.
- One purpose of your slides is to prompt you as to what you are going to say.
- Another purpose is to help your audience understand your presentation by giving them key words and not a full script of your presentation.
Rules:
- Use no more than 3 slides per minute
- Do not use any fonts smaller than 24 point. (Often that is still too small)
- Use light backgrounds with dark type when possible.
- Put no more than 6 words on a line.
- Use no more than 6 lines per slide.
- Use the full screen, do not crowd the text at the top of the screen
- Avoid turning your back to the audience
- When possible, rehearse your presentation in the actual room and check out the readability from the back of the room.
